According to US media Heavy, sources revealed that some within the Warriors are willing to trade young players to increase their chances of defending their title in the new season, and the most likely young player to be sent away is Wiseman. Some executives suggested that the Warriors trade Wiseman for Spurs center Peltier.
"Some people within the Warriors are evaluating the performance of young players and they may trade one or two of them to be more capable of defending their championship." One Western Conference executive said, "Wiseman is the one at the top of that list because there are teams still interested in him and want to know how much potential he can develop as a big man with shooting and defense."
Wiseman missed last season due to injury and is expected to serve as Looney's backup this upcoming season, but there are still some questions about his overall strength. The Warriors had high expectations for Wiseman when they picked him up with the top pick two years ago, but now it's clear that his growth has not lived up to expectations.
The Warriors gave up the chance to draft LaMelo (three-ball) in order to get Wiseman in the first place, and they naturally hope that Wiseman will eventually play. From the reports, the Warriors haven't made up their minds yet, but are at least evaluating and considering the possibility of trading Wiseman. The executive believes the Warriors could trade with the Spurs to achieve a win-win outcome.
"If the Warriors are willing to trade, I think they can talk to the Spurs and you can trade Wiseman for Purcell and maybe get a protected first round from the Spurs. 26-year-old Purcell is more mature than 21-year-old Wiseman, and of course, Wiseman has more upside. But the Warriors need to win in the moment." Purcell contributed 13.5 points, 9.3 rebounds and 1.7 caps per game in 2021-22.
Do people think the Warriors should trade Wiseman to boost the roster's in-the-moment strength to defend their title?
